On April 15 local time, a stripping and mining launch ceremony was held for the Katumba Copper Mine Project, co-constructed by China Railway No.9 Group and China Mineral Resources Group, in the Mumbwa mining area of Zambia’s Central Province. The ceremony was attended by Zambia’s Minister of Mines Paul Kabuswe, along with several senior government officials and local chiefs.
In his speech, Minister Kabuswe stated that the commencement of stripping and mining at the Katumba Copper Mine Project is a significant step towards achieving Zambia’s ambitious goal of producing 3 million tonnes of copper annually by 2030, and will create over 2,500 job opportunities.
The Katumba Copper Mine Project is designed for a mining production capacity of 3.5 million tonnes per year, with an expected construction period of two years and a production lifespan of 14 years. Utilizing internationally advanced mining technologies and deeply integrating intelligent and green concepts, the project aims to establish a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly model of a modern mine. Once operational, it will significantly enhance regional resource supply capacity and promote the upgrading of Zambia’s industrial chain.?
